Google Fixes 26 High-Severity Vulnerabilities in ChromeOS LTS

Google has released ChromeOS LTS 144.0.7559.261 with fixes for 28 vulnerabilities, including 26 high-severity issues affecting networking, WebGL, extensions and the file system.

Google has started rolling out ChromeOS LTS 144.0.7559.261 to most supported devices. The release contains fixes for 28 vulnerabilities: 26 rated High and two rated Medium.

What the update fixes

The update addresses security issues in networking components, WebGL, extensions, payments, the file system, video processing, the user interface and HTML.

A significant part of the list consists of use-after-free flaws, which occur when software accesses memory after it has been released. Google identified this class of issue in components including Media, Payments, WebGL, Extensions, FileSystem, UI, HTML and Translate.

Google also fixed a buffer overflow in the Network component, a heap buffer overflow in Video, a privilege-elevation issue in Import and several cases of insufficient validation of untrusted input.

Which devices receive the update

Version 144.0.7559.261 is intended for devices on the ChromeOS Long-Term Support channel. It is being distributed with platform version 16503.94.0.

The update applies specifically to ChromeOS and ChromeOS Flex. It is not a release of the standard Google Chrome browser for Windows or macOS.

What users should do

ChromeOS installs system updates automatically. Users and device administrators should confirm that the update has downloaded and restart the device if the system requests a reboot.

Google has not reported that the listed vulnerabilities are being exploited in real-world attacks. The release should therefore be treated as a routine security update, not as confirmation of an active attack campaign.
